Decision Strategist & Former Professional Poker Player | Author of Thinking in Bets | Decision-Making Under Uncertainty Expert
"Bridging poker strategy and investment decision-making through probability thinking and process discipline"
Biography
Annie Duke is a former professional poker player and decision-making strategist whose framework for thinking in probabilities has been embraced by investors across asset classes, including natural resources. Her relevance to mining investors comes through her collaboration with Howard Marks, co-founder of Oaktree Capital, who dedicated his January 2020 memo "You Bet" to her work and hosted her for a special conversation at Oaktree. Marks explicitly connected Duke's decision framework to speculation and investing under uncertainty — the exact conditions junior mining investors face daily.
Duke won over $4 million in poker tournament earnings, including a World Series of Poker bracelet and a Tournament of Champions title, before retiring in 2012. She holds a graduate degree in cognitive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and has spent the past decade translating poker's decision principles into frameworks for business and investing. Her book Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts (2018) became a widely cited resource in investment circles.
Her core contribution is the distinction between decision quality and outcome quality — what she calls "resulting." In mining speculation, a well-researched junior stock can fail due to geology, politics, or commodity prices, while a reckless bet on a promotional shell company might pay off. Duke argues that judging decisions solely by outcomes leads to systematic errors. Instead, she advocates explicitly assigning probabilities, acknowledging uncertainty, and building decision processes that account for what you don't know. She also addresses hindsight bias — the tendency to treat past events as having been inevitable — which is particularly dangerous when reconstructing why a mining investment succeeded or failed.
For resource investors, Duke's framework is most useful when applied to early-stage speculation, where information is incomplete and outcomes are binary. Her emphasis on separating what you control (your process) from what you don't (drill results, permitting decisions, macro commodity moves) aligns with disciplined portfolio construction in the junior mining space. While she does not cover specific commodities or mining companies, her probability-based approach to capital allocation under uncertainty is directly applicable to high-risk resource investing.
