Biography

Jamie Keech runs Resource Insider, an independent investment research service that gives accredited investors access to natural resource opportunities they would not typically find on their own. A former mining engineer turned financier, Keech has spent nearly two decades in the resource sector, working on mining projects across multiple continents before shifting full-time to company-building and investment research. He is also a partner at Inventa Capital, a private venture builder that incubates and finances early-stage natural resource companies.

Keech's track record is built on founding, incubating, and financing resource companies rather than simply analyzing them from a desk. Through Resource Insider, he has expanded coverage well beyond his original gold-and-copper focus to include uranium, lithium, and private energy infrastructure deals. Two examples that illustrate his approach: an Oklahoma energy royalty venture and a North Dakota terminal acquisition, both of which have moved from concept to cash-flowing assets for his subscriber base. He regularly presents at the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference, one of the largest gatherings of resource investors globally.

His investment philosophy centers on what he calls the "energy decade" — the thesis that technology-driven electricity demand, particularly from data centers, will create sustained upward pressure on energy commodities for years. Keech evaluates opportunities through a technical lens shaped by his engineering background, looking for projects where he can understand the geology, the processing, and the capital requirements before committing capital. He favors situations where a company or asset is mispriced relative to its stage of advancement — a producing royalty, a past-producing mine with restart potential, or a private placement in a company with an underappreciated asset.

For mining stock investors, Keech offers two things worth following: a framework for evaluating resource equities that balances technical due diligence with capital markets savvy, and a window into deals — royalties, private placements, early-stage ventures — that retail investors rarely see. His Resource Insider podcast and newsletter cover the intersection of policy, markets, and technology in energy and mining, making his content relevant to anyone trying to understand how the energy transition is reshaping commodity demand.

Proven Investment Strategies for the “Energy Decade” with Resource Insider’s Jamie Keech

  • Top takeaway He says his energy decade thesis is more right than ever: the tech apparatus has outgrown the carrying capacity of the physical world, and data center power commitments now run into the tens or hundreds of gigawatts, with one gigawatt roughly equal to 800,000 homes.
  • After auditing more than 40 mining investments, he concludes the repeatable edge is advanced-stage exploration - a resource or enough data to infer one, a team that can execute, and a stable jurisdiction - where returns often doubled to 5x.
  • Grassroots drilling is the opposite: he puts the failure rate near 100% with average losses of 50 to 80% of invested capital, and says the wins came from buying cheaply in private placements and exiting into the listing, not from discovery.
  • About 80% of what they do is still mining; the rest is energy businesses they build themselves, including an Oklahoma royalty venture and an infrastructure firm where members put in $24 million for a North Dakota terminal bought at about 5.7x EBITDA, now paying distributions, with further terminal bids and another acquisition under discussion.
  • He launched a public stock-picking service the week before the interview - roughly monthly picks, currently gold and copper - and says it made more money in the last 18 months than the private-placement business because volatility keeps creating entry points.

Tech's growth has outrun the physical world's carrying capacity, making energy — not technology — the binding investment constraint of the decade. An audit of 40-plus mining investments found advanced-stage explorers with defined resources and stable jurisdictions consistently outperformed, often doubling to 5X. Grassroots drilling carried a near-100% failure rate, so returns came from private placements bought cheap and listed within 6 to 18 months. An Oklahoma royalty venture and a North Dakota terminal bought at 5.7x EBITDA (core cash earnings) now pay dividends to private investors. Junior mining is a capital-raising game where pressure to raise often turns operators from prey into predators, per Keech.
