Peter Akerley

President & CEO | Erdene Resource Development | Mining Executive and Geologist

"Leading Erdene Resource Development's discovery and construction of the Bayan Khundii Gold Project in Mongolia."

Mining Executive

Biography

Peter Akerley is a mining executive and geologist who currently serves as the President, CEO, and Director of Erdene Resource Development Corp. (TSX:ERD). He leads a company focused on discovering and developing high-grade gold and copper-gold projects in Mongolia. Resource investors track Akerley's work because he has spent over two decades building a mineral exploration company from a grassroots concept into a near-term gold producer in one of the world's most prospective, yet underexplored, mineral belts.

Akerley co-founded Erdene in 2000. Under his leadership, the company has discovered and defined multiple gold deposits in southwestern Mongolia, including the high-grade Bayan Khundii project. Erdene's most significant milestone under Akerley is the recent completion of a fully funded construction program for the Bayan Khundii Gold Project. By successfully steering the project from early-stage exploration (guided by NI 43-101 geological standards) through feasibility studies, permitting, and construction financing, Akerley has demonstrated the ability to execute in a complex foreign jurisdiction.

As a geologist turned chief executive, Akerley focuses on regions with high geological potential but limited modern exploration. His approach centers on district-scale exploration strategies, meaning he looks for opportunities where a single discovery can unlock an entire mineralized belt. His technical background allows him to speak directly to the structural geology, drill results, and resource estimates that drive mining valuations, while his corporate experience covers the financing, metallurgy, and political relationships required to build a mine.

Investors should pay attention to Akerley for his direct insights into building a mining company in Mongolia. He provides a boots-on-the-ground perspective on the operational realities, infrastructure, and regulatory environment of the country. Following his commentary offers a practical view into how exploration companies transition from discovery to production and how management teams manage risk in emerging markets.

  • Top takeaway Argues the company is at a critical re-rating point: moving from a start-up mine to steady-state production typically lifts the valuation one, two, or three times as investors see it deliver on what it said it would do.
  • Contends the growth options around the mine need no new exploration — expansions and second deposits are already identified, so the work is sequencing their development while exploration continues in the district.
  • Recounts entering Mongolia in the late 1990s as a geologist, drawn by the unexplored Central Asian Orogenic Belt and a government welcoming foreign investment, and building the company through country-wide regional exploration.
  • Explains the decision to build the first mine as a way to stop facing dilution in equity markets and to fund the rest of the district pipeline from mine cash flow.
  • Says infrastructure was once a drawback (200 kilometers to the Chinese border and another 800 kilometers to rail or road) but has become an advantage now that rails, roads, grid power, and coal haul roads reach the projects.

Erdene Resource Development started production at its high-grade Bayan Khundii gold mine in Mongolia in September, the district's first open pit. CEO Peter Akerley expects a one-to-three-times valuation re-rating as the new mine moves to steady-state production through 2026. A five-year plan sequences expansion at Bayan Khundii, a second gold polymetallic project, and the Zunmod molybdenum-copper project 35 kilometers east. Mine cash flow is intended to fund already-discovered projects without further equity dilution, a chronic pain point for junior miners. New rail, roads, and grid power reached the once-remote district, while unexplored ground still yields high-grade surface discoveries, says Akerley.
